Kincardine Horticultural Society learns about creatures living in our gardens

With the spooky season upon us, it seemed only fitting that the Kincardine and District Horticultural Society welcomed a speaker who could remind us that some of the most interesting “spooky” creatures may already be living right in our gardens.

Brian Robin of Grange Hollow entertained and educated members with his funny and interesting presentation “Peepers, Leapers and Creepers – and a Few Flappers," at the October meeting.

His talk focused on the amazing extra guests we find living among our gardens – from frogs, and snakes to spiders, insects and moths.

Robin described himself as a reluctant gardener. What changed his mind was discovering what the plants brought along with them. A garden isn’t just about flowers and vegetables; it can become a wonderful habitat for an amazing variety of creatures.

One of his particular interests is frogs, and he has spent many hours observing them. He reminded us that one of the surest signs that spring has arrived is the familiar sound of the peepers. Spring peepers certainly make themselves heard with their remarkably loud calls which are coming from such tiny frogs.

Members learned about several of our local amphibians, including the gray tree frog, American toad, and leopard frog, and the important role these creatures play in the garden eco-system. He reminded us that the creatures we sometimes consider pests or nuisances may actually be valuable garden helpers.

Our next meeting is Monday, Nov. 2, when our guest speaker will be David Bannister who will be bringing us information on indoor gardening.
