Driver facing charges after officer nearly struck at traffic stop

(BLUEWATER, ON) - One person has been charged after failing to move over for an emergency vehicle in the Municipality of Bluewater, near Goderich.

Friday, Oct. 16, just before 9 a.m., a member of the Huron County OPP was conducting traffic enforcement as part of Operation Safe Haul, on Highway 21 just south of Goderich. While the officer was out of his fully-marked police cruiser on a traffic stop with his emergency lights activated, a vehicle in the oncoming lane began passing another vehicle nearly striking the officer.

Police located the subject vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The accused, a 40-year-old Bayfield man has been charged with Fail to slow down and proceed with caution for emergency vehicle.

The accused was released, with a $490 fine and three demerit points.

When approaching or passing an emergency vehicle or tow truck with its lights activated, all drivers must either slow down or move over when it is safe to do so. Failure to follow this law puts the lives of emergency responders and the public at risk.
