It appears that the travelling team is on the winning side, as the Kincardine Bulldogs and Walkerton Hawks have won a game apiece on each other's turf, in the opening matches of the Western Junior "C" final series on the weekend.
Friday night, the Hawks hosted Game 1 and tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Bulldogs hung on to win, 3-2.
Kincardine made the score 3-1 on a goal by Derrick Bernath at 17:15 in the second period, and Walkerton got as close as 3-2 when Braden Boley scored 8:25 into the third period.
Also scoring for Kincardine, were Eric Langridge and Gerrit Satosek, with assists from Tyler Fregona (2), Dalton Hnatko, Shawn Rooke, Brady Richards, and Keegan Angel.
The Hawks were helped by Lauchlin Elder, who tallied one goal. Elder scored on the powerplay 5:35 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kincardine. Josh Deyell provided the assist. Also recording assists for the Hawks, were Ryan Hamelin and Spencer Elder.
Bulldogs goalie Jacob Hutchings stopped 19 shots out of the 21 that he faced, while goalie Nick Redman recorded 26 saves for the Hawks.
Sunday afternoon, the Hawks came to the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, and handed the home team a 6-3 loss
Lauchlin Elder had a hat-trick for the Hawks, notching his first goal 11:55 into the first period. He then added goals at 14:53 into the second and at 14:07 into the third.
The 'Dogs were riddled with penalties, allowing four goals while on the penalty-kill.
Kincardine's 13 penalties came back to haunt it, as the Bulldogs let up four goals while on the penalty kill.
However, the Bulldogs forced the Hawks goalie, Nick Redman, to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. Goal-scorers for the 'Dogs were Patrick Wiejak, who scored on the powerplay 6:27 into the first period to make it 1-0 Kincardine. Matthew Mah picked up the assist. Others who scored for Kincardine, included Shawn Rooke and Brett Burrows, who scored one goal each, with an assist from Gerrit Satosek.
Walkerton also got points from Chris RolfVonDenBauman, who registered one goal and one assist; Josh Deyell, who also finished with one goal and one assist; and Brendan Welsh, who grabbed one goal and one assist. More assists for Walkerton came via Connor Patton, Spencer Elder, Reid Simmons, and Tyler Cunningham, who each chipped in one.
The Hawks' Redman stopped 28 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Bulldogs goalie Jacob Hutchings took the loss and made 12 saves before being replaced by Craig Luinstra (AP) who made nine saves.
With the win, Walkerton evened the series at 1-1 in the best-of-seven showdown.
The 'Dogs are back in Walkerton for Game 3, Friday, March 11, at 8:30 p.m.; return to the Davidson Centre, Saturday March 12, at 7:30 p.m. for Game 4; and play Game 5 in Walkerton, Sunday, March 13, at 2:50 p.m.
If necessary, Game 6 runs March 19, 7 p.m., at the Davidson Centre; and Game 7 is March 20 at 2:50 p.m. in Walkerton.
