Huron Heights wins South West regional boys basketball championship

The Huron Heights Lightning Hawks boys basketball team won the South West regional championship banner at the boys and girls elementary school tournament held Tuesday at Kincardine District Secondary School.

Attending the tournament, were teams from Huron Heights, Elgin Market, Ripley and Lucknow. The Ripley boys won the runner-up banner.

The first game of the day for Huron Heights was against Elgin Market. The Lightning Hawks cruised past Elgin Market with a 76-7 win, with all team members contributing points, and Wilson Shipp and Zach Bumba leading with 10 points each.

Next up, was Lucknow, and the boys showed their great teamwork again, with 11 of 12 members scoring points. The boys won, 58-26, with Zach Wall leading with 12 points, and Zach Bumba and Robert McGregor with eight apiece.

The final game was against the always-competitive Ripley boys. Both teams had a 2-0 record, so this game was for the championship. Having previously played Ripley, the Lightning Hawks knew they would have to play their best. Their excellent defence and offence combined to come away with a decisive 60-28 win. Zach Bumba contributed 26 points, while Zach Wall had 18 points, and Jaydon Troke had 14 points.

With this championship win, the Lightning Hawks have qualified for the Bluewater Elementary School Championships in Flesherton, April 11.
