Huron Heights boys win Bluewater basketball championship

The Huron Heights Lightning Hawks of Kincardine travelled to the Bluewater boys basketball championships in Flesherton, Friday, April 15, and brought home the championship banner.

After inclement weather caused the tournament to be pushed to Friday from Monday, the boys were able to get a couple of extra practises in, and were raring to go.

Attending the tournament were winners of each regional championship, and included: Sydenham (Owen Sound), G.C. Huston (Southampton), Walkerton, John Diefenbaker (Hanover), Osprey (Maxwell), Hillcrest (Owen Sound), Bruce Peninsula (Lion's Head) and Huron Heights.

The Lightning Hawks`first game was against Bruce Peninsula. Great shooting by Jaydon Troke, Zach Bumba and Zach Wall all contributed to the 32-16 win.

Game 2 saw the boys match up with Osprey. Osprey was an extremely aggressive team, but the Lightning Hawks were able to shut down its offence, and take a 38-14 win, with Troke scoring 12 and Bumba 11.

Immediately after Game 2, the boys faced Hillcrest for Game 3. The previous game had worn on them, and most of the first half was held at 3-2 for the Lightning Hawks. Hillcrest was able to capitalize on its fresh legs, and came away with a 15-13 win over the Lightning Hawks.

After winning their pool due to a point differential tie-break, the boys faced Sydenham. It was obvious early on that Huron Heights was the more-skillful team, and the Lightning Hawks went on to win, 40-21. Jaydon Troke again led with 15 points, followed by Zach Bumba with nine.

The final opponent was G.C. Huston. The Lightning Hawks came out flying with Aaron Reid scoring in the opening seconds. The strong Huron Heights defence again was too much for the opposing team, and the boys came away with a decisive 47-24 win to capture the championship banner.

Leading scorers were: Jaydon Troke 58 points, Zach Bumba 43 and Zach Wall 27. Point guard Aaron Reid initiated many successful plays, and showed incredible defence. The championship wraps up the Lightning Hawks season, as they finish with a 10-1 record.
