Local citizens have right to referendum on OPG's DGR project, says reader

To the Editor:
RE: "Sutton's lack of outside research, and simplified statements are misleading, says reader"

Well-written and well-researched!

One of the most important points is that the proposed DGR (Deep Geologic Repository) would be in sedimentary rock, something never tried before. The very nature of this layered rock is such that a strong tremor could disrupt it. I doubt we have accurate seismic records specific to the rock in question, and what we have is from a relatively short time span, compared to the proposed life of the DGR.

Failure of the facilities mentioned should be a clear warning sign that we know little about storing nuclear waste for the long-term.

Why would any rational person be willing to gamble that the proposed DGR is the right answer, when so much is at stake in the most heavily-populated areas in Canada and the United States?

I believe it is absolutely imperative that the citizens of this area have the right to a referendum on a Deep Geologic Repository (DGR).
