Kincardine Theatre Guild's production of "Mrs. Parliament's Night Out" is fast-paced and funny

What's a woman to do when her husband of 32 years forgets their anniversary?

Well, she walks out - and joins the camera club, takes dancing lessons, joins a bowling league, takes art lessons, and even sits in on a Narcotics Anonymous meeting!

Such is the backdrop for 'Mrs. Parliament's Night Out," the Kincardine Theatre Guild production that opened Friday night at the Kincardine Arts Centre.

As usual, the Norm Foster comedy has lots of funny lines, beautifully delivered by a stellar cast.

Newcomer Charlene Mumberson shines as Teresa Parliament, effortlessly moving from one scene to another as the tale unfolds. She is grace personified, even as she contemplates "dessert" with a younger man who is not her husband.

The remaining cast is wonderful, playing opposite Mrs. Parliament in the roles of the lingerie sales clerk, the watch salesman, the grocer, junkies, the art teacher, the singing instructor, and so much more.

However, Jim and Leise Peddie steal the show as Carl and Ruby Lewicki, the nosy neighbours who sit on the doorstep and comment on all the people walking by. They are hysterically funny, bantering back and forth in perfect comedic timing, and leaving the audience in stitches!

Gradually through the second act, Mrs. Parliament takes control of her life, much to the chagrin of her sexist husband, Chuck (played beautifully by Fort Papalia who insists that he's much nicer than Chuck)! And even more to the delight of the handsome Steve Blackburn (Steve Small) who leads the Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

With Mrs. Parliament working as a waitress and her husband concerned that his life has been turned upside down, we are left wondering whether Mrs. Parliament will continue living alone in the apartment she moved into, whether she will meet up with the intriguing Steve, or whether she will return home to her husband.

"Mrs. Parliament's Night Out" is entertaining and fun, with a bit of serious drama thrown in. It is produced by Donna Baxter, and directed by Jim Peddie, with assistant director Corinne Robertson-Brown.
 

The show continues June 2-3, and June 9-10, at 8 p.m., with matinees at 2 p.m. June 4-5. Tickets are $18 each; available at J'Adorn in downtown Kincardine.
