Huron County OPP joins forces with Special Olympians in torch run June 14

(HURON COUNTY, ON) -  One week from today marks an event in Huron County that Special Olympians and Huron County OPP officers look forward to every year.

Huron OPP officers and Special Olympians from all over Huron County will run, walk, and stroll together, Tuesday, June 14, in an effort to promote awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics Ontario.

The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run is a community-based, province-wide event that sees the “Flame of Hope” carried across Ontario by members of law enforcement agencies throughout the province. Since the first Law Enforcement Torch Run, established in Canada in 1987, more than $26-million has been raised in the province.

The Huron County Torch Run is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at the Wingham OPP detachment located on Bristol Terrace.  The run will go through Wingham ending at the south end mall. Participants will then be transported to Blyth, Clinton and Goderich where they will complete a run/walk/stroll in each of those communities. After completing the final leg in Goderich, participants and supporters will take part in a celebration barbecue. The barbecue is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. located at McGee Motors on Suncoast Drive East in Goderich.

Any person or business that is looking to donate to this wonderful cause, can donate on the event day by cash or cheque made payable to “Ontario Special Olympics.”

“Last year we had tremendous support for the Law Enforcement Torch Run," said Huron OPP Torch Run co-ordinator Sergeant Russ Nesbitt. "People came out to line the streets and cheer on the Olympians carrying the Flame of Hope.  On behalf of our committee, I would like to pass on our sincere thanks to all those who have come out to run with us, cheer us on and to those who have financially supported us over the years.”

Bus transportation from Goderich to Wingham will be provided free of charge. Please arrive at the Goderich OPP detachment, located on Courthouse Square, prior to the 8 a.m. departure time.
