Let's improve recycling efforts in Municipality of Kincardine, says writer

To the Editor:

With a number of recycling barrels staged around the Municipality of Kincardine, this is probably a good time to send out a reminder of the protocol required to make this program successful.

For the barrels, (unlike curbside pick-up), the contents are limited to plastic bottles and cans. Putting anything else in there, condemns all the contents to “garbage” status. When it says “no glass,” that’s exactly what it means. We have to be diligent on the front end. Where there is a recycling barrel, usually there is a garbage can in close proximity. Take that extra moment to think, what is the appropriate destination for that article?

Something else that would be beneficial, is to ensure the cans or plastic are emptied of their contents. While one full container of liquid may not add a lot of extra weight, certainly a number of them do. I’m sure the parched earth would appreciate the extra liquid, and the recycling handlers would certainly appreciate less weight.

With the Kincardine Scottish Festival weekend coming up, this is a good time to remind people of how discouraging the results were from last year. All the contents of 72 recyclable barrels were condemned to garbage. Hoping the response this year will be more positive. Recycling efforts at Connaught Park and Station Beach also need to be redoubled.

Realizing that knowledge is power, I hope this reminder will encourage people to think more about recycling, and also encourage others. Feel good knowing that you’re doing your part for the environment, and reducing the strain on our landfill sites.
