Calling all residents, young and old, come CELEBRATE Canada Day, Friday, July 1, in good ole' Kincardine.
Your Canada committee requests that every household and business hoist the Canadian flag on their premises the week leading up to Canada Day. You can do it, Kincardine!
The Canada Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. sharp, from the Kincardine Legion, led by the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band. Following closely will be Legion members, dignitaries and the Kincardine Air Cadets and school children carrying a huge Canadian flag - similar to the way the flag is presented at the Olympics.
The parade will be followed by the official Canada Day ceremonies which will get under way at the waterfront flag pole at 11:30 a.m. Special Canada Day plaques will be presented to the youngest, oldest and the person travelling the furthest at the event.
Something historic is also going to happen this year. Kincardine is honouring a living legend, as Dr. Gary Gurbin is celebrating his 50th anniversary as a family physician in Kincardine. Gurbin is a half-century doctor just as Dr. Solomon Secord was. Solomon took a few years off to serve in the south in the United States Civil War, while Gurbin took a few years off in the 1980s to serve as our Member of Parliament BUT came back on the weekends to work shifts at the hospital.
Gurbin is an amazing man and a great Canadian. He is still recruiting doctors to come and practise in our community and is a wonderful role model to them. He is still active in the administration of the historic and restored Kincardine Pavilion, having led the charge to save it from demolition.
The Canada Day committee wants to give Gurbin a big community hug, recognizing the love, respect and appreciation that people in Kincardine have for him. So, come on out, give Gurbin a handshake, a pat on the back or a hug, for all he has done for you, your family and the community.
Mike Walsh will again be leading us in the singing of "O Canada," the like of which has never been sung so heartily and loudly in Kincardine. As we sing so patriotically, we will be in awe as the largest flag in the county makes its way up the flag pole.
We live in the best country in the world! We are No. 1. Come celebrate Canada at our beautiful waterfront. Come and give your lungs a good workout. Improve your posture – stand a little straighter and taller when you stand up for Canada on Canada Day in the best municipality in the country.
Wear red and white – paint your face – carry a wee Canadian flag to wave. Bring a noisemaker (whistle, horn, cowbell, etc.) to make a JOYFUL, LOUD, NOISE for Canada when the flag is raised. Do it, Kincardine! Do it for Canada!
Plan to stick around after the ceremony for some Canada Day cake. If you paint your face, meet me, Keith Davidson, at the stage for a group picture for the local press! Take in all the entertainment, food and fun activities at Macpherson Park. And don’t forget the giant fireworks at dusk – they will be awesome!
It will be a great day for Canada, eh?
