The Kincardine branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, but the organization has been around for almost 100 years.
After the First World War, women’s participation in the war effort prompted them to advocate for equality and women’s rights.
The CFUW was founded in 1919 and is a non-profit, non-partisan, self-funded organization, working for the improvement of the status of women and girls, the promotion of quality public education, and the advancement of human rights, justice and peace. These goals are achieved by lobbying the government with resolutions submitted annually by members from individual clubs across Canada.
Kincardine CFUW received its charter in 1991 and administers a trust fund to provide two yearly bursaries given to female graduates of Kincardine District Secondary School who are going on to higher education. This year for the first time, the group is initiating a bursary at the Lake Huron Learning Centre for a mature female graduate who is proceeding on to higher learning.
CFUW is different than other women’s groups in that it gives members the opportunity to do more than just one thing. You can make new friends, advocate on a variety of issues, socialize with like-minded women, engage in life-long learning, and enjoy a feeling of empowerment linking women locally, nationally and internationally.
The meetings include educational guest speakers focusing on current issues, fund-raising activities, social outings and special interest groups such as Book Club, Mahjong and Breakfast Club.
Membership is open to any woman who supports the goals of CFUW. Through the years, the CFUW has grown to include more than 100 clubs Canada-wide with more than 9,000 members.
