Purple Grove news

We are sure thankful that everyone was praying for rain. That was a big help, but we still need more, please.

Thanks to Fran Farrell and Bren deLeeuw for planning a Summer Adventure, Thursday. Our first stop was at the home of Sylvia and David Leigh in Kincardine. What a delight to see the prolific vegetable garden and the lovely flower garden. From there, we travelled to the Bruce Botanical Food Gardens in Ripley. Executive director Lynne Taylor gave us a guided tour of the gardens. One of the highlights was seeing all the work the volunteers have done and the Seabuckthorn trees. We then travelled to the home of Joyce Farrell and June Elliott near Wingham. Joyce welcomed us with a poem, talking about the importance of friendships and community. We were pleased to have Irene and Bonnie Boyle join us for a tasty supper meal. President Janet Rhody conducted a brief meeting before we all wandered our way home.

Janet Rhody, Zarien and Xavier Zuk spent time in the garden digging up potatoes and gathering tomatoes. The drought has certainly affected so many of our garden crops as we know they aren’t the only ones digging potatoes.

Marilyn and Jo Reid attended the ball game that Tanner Reid was playing in, at the Ontario Summer Games in Mississauga, Friday.

Our sympathy goes to Russell Barr of Gravenhurst in the loss of  his wife, Trixie. Family from here attended the funeral last week.

Sunday, most of the family gathered at the home of Joyce and John Farrell to celebrate Evan Becker’s seventh birthday.

Mary Anne Kukoly visited with Delbert Hedley and Largaret McInnes at Pinecrest Manor, Lucknow, recently.

While looking through a June, 1968, issue of the Lucknow Sentinel, Mary Anne was amazed by the number of correspondents who sent in news from their local areas. There were columns from Amberley, Ashfield, Culross, Dungannon, Kingsbridge,  Kinlough, Langside, Lochalsh, Olivet, Purple Grove, St. Helens, South Kinloss,  Whitechurch and Zion. What a commentary on the changes in our rural countryside.

We are all looking forward to the bridal shower for Nikki Reid, Sunday afternoon.
