(ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) – The Huron County OPP has laid another "racing" charge.
Shortly before 2 p.m. Aug. 6, a Huron County OPP officer spotted a Mercedes sport utility vehicle travelling southbound on Bluewater Veterans Highway, north of Kingsbridge, at a high rate of speed. The officer activated his RADAR unit and locked in the speed of the racing vehicle at 139 km/h, a whopping 59 km/h over the posted 80 km/h speed limit.
The vehicle was subsequently stopped and the driver was charged. 54-year-old Sanjiv GUPTA of Oakville has been charged with Racing. He will have to attend Provincial Offences court in Goderich, Sept. 20, to answer to the charge. His licence has been suspended for seven days and his motor vehicle was impounded for a week.
*THIS CHARGE HAS YET TO BE PROVEN IN COURT*
The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver’s Handbook states: “The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits. For example, on roads with a posted limit of 60 km/h or less, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost eight times greater for vehicles colliding at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit.”
