Kincardine author releases timely tome, "Trumping the States"
Bombarded by news about the presidential election in the United States, Kelly Young (above) wondered what would happen if Republican candidate Donald Trump defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and became president.

That, and a call for short stories, prompted the Kincardine author to begin writing her speculative fiction novelette, “Trumping the States.”

“We had been watching the process in the States from the primaries through the party conventions to the current campaigns," says Young, "and in that time, I went from bemused to amused, and then from incredulous to alarmed. I started to wonder what would happen if Trump actually did win the election? This piece of speculative fiction was the result.”

Once she began writing, she realized it was going to be longer than a short story, but not a full-length novel.

She finished the novelette in early September, had it proofread, and then released it Sept. 21 through Kindle Direct Publishing.

Set 20 years in the future, the book centres on a woman who is helping her teenaged grandson with his high school history project. It is her story of what exactly happened in Canada leading up to, and following, Trump's successful bid to become president of the United States. Full of twists and turns and lots of conspiracy theories, Grandma's story provides plenty of fuel for the young man's essay.

“The reaction has been interesting,” says Young. “One review gave it five stars, and said it was very clever. 'The author does a great job at laying out the political landscape in a clear and thoughtful way. A humorous but scary read as a Canadian living in the US!' Another reader said it was a “real page-turner'.”

It is a quick read, and Young's use of engaging conversation is superb. Canadian readers will enjoy the many references to prime minister Justin Trudeau and his reaction to the gathering storm in the south.

As for the current state of affairs in the States, Young says she is glad to see Trump self-destructing as the Nov. 8 election date draws near. “My worst-case scenario would be that Trump wins.”

“Trumping the States” is available at Amazon.com.

This is Young's 10th publication and second piece of speculative fiction, after the publication of her short story, “Assimilation,” in 2012.

Her first full-length novel, “Flurries Ending,” was published in 2014. Her horror short stories, “Shadows and Kisses in the Moonlight;” short story, “Best Forgotten;” novelette, “Shades of Green: The Fraulein and the Handyman,” poetry collection, “From the Heart: A Lifetime of Poetry;” humour book, “Living With Men;” and children's book, “The Mitten Tree,” were all published in 2012. All are available at Amazon.com.

All her works are E-books because they are not as expensive to publish as paper copies, she says. And a lot of people have E-readers. There is also a Kindle reader app (application) that can be downloaded for free, she adds.

Young, 53, lives with her husband and two cats in Kincardine. A mother of two grown sons, she is a graduate of the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature, and a former freelance reporter. She is currently employed as a swimming instructor.

She stresses that when people look for her publications, she is not the erotica writer Kelly Young who also has her books available on Amazon.com.
