Kincardine, Port Elgin teams advance to FIRST Lego League provincials in Waterloo

Kincardine, Port Elgin teams advance to FIRST Lego League provincials in Waterloo
Two local FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams have advanced to the provincial finals in Waterloo, after winning awards at the qualifying regional held Nov. 26 at Kincardine District Secondary School.

The Port Elgin Harambe Lovers won the Robot Performance award and the Champion award, while the Kincardine Lego Warriors won the Robot Design award. Both teams will now compete Feb. 4, at the provincials in Waterloo.

Eleven teams participated in the Kincardine regional, including five from Kincardine (three from Huron Heights and Elgin Market and two from St. Anthony's School), two from Collingwood, and teams from Teeswater, Clinton, Port Elgin and Hanover.

Conducted by members of the Kinetic Knights Robotics Team 781, the challenge for this year's competition was "Animal Allies," and teams were required to present a project, discuss core values, and create a robot that would compete against the other teams.

During the closing ceremony, other awards were presented including:
 
  • Volunteer award - Katherine Andersen of Collingwood
  • Youth volunteer award - James Adams of the Kinetic Knights
  • Rookie All-Star award - Huron Christian School of Clinton
  • Core Values award - The Bumble Beez of Collingwood
  • Project award - The Robo Gamers of Collingwood

The Kincardine regional was funded through FIRST Canada and the Community Foundation Grey-Bruce.

The Kinetic Knights also held a fund-raising ham and scalloped potato dinner, Sunday, Nov. 20, serving about 70 people.
