Former Kincardine town mayor honoured at council meeting
Wednesday night's Kincardine council meeting began with a minute of silence in honour of Charles Mann, mayor of the former Town of Kincardine, and veteran of the Second World War.
Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie said many people in the area and from around the world had the privilege of knowing Mann.
"He was an excellent speaker and he was interested in people of all ages, from the Air Cadets to the Probus Club," she said. "He often spoke of his experiences in the Second World War, as a member of the elite First Special Service Force, the Devil's Brigade. He served in municipal politics, including 13 years as mayor, and he volunteered with many community organizations."
Eadie said Mann received many medals and awards, including the United States Congressional Gold Medal for his military service. He was also named Kincardine's Citizen of the Year in 2013.
"I would like us to stop for a moment of silence in honour of Charles Mann and his contributions to his community and his country," she said.
Mann's funeral was held Saturday morning at the Anglican Church of the Messiah, Kincardine.
Friday night, a Northern Light Masonic Lodge service was held at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, followed by a Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 183, service.
