Fishing club reports hatchery well staffed, but volunteers needed for salmon derby

The Brown Trout Hatchery in Kincardine now has a full complement of volunteers, but more help is needed to organize the annual Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby.

That's the word from Dick Verrips of the Lake Huron Fishing Club which puts on the derby every year.

Last month, the fishing club was desperate for volunteers or it would have to shut down the trout hatchery and no longer run the salmon derby.

"Four volunteers have come forward to take on the management responsibilities at the trout hatchery," said Verrips, in an E-mail message. "This includes a manager, secretary/treasurer, manpower co-ordinator, and maintenance. As well, there is now a waiting list of volunteers willing to assist at the hatchery."

The Classic Salmon Derby still requires more volunteers, said Verrips. "Although there are a number of positive leads, at this point, we do not have a commitment for three essential positions: sponsor co-ordinator, corporate sponsor canvasser, and promotion and media co-ordinator."

Another position requiring volunteers is the Kids Day Program for the derby in Kincardine. This day is an opportunity for kids to enjoy fishing and have fun in conjunction with the derby. Every participant receives a fishing kit, courtesy of J&J Tackle, and a lucky draw for a bicycle at each weigh station. Directions and guidance for planning and hosting this event are readily available from previous volunteers.
