Small Town Grocery store opens in Lucknow

March 13, 2017

With the loss of the Knechtel Food Market, which closed its doors Sept. 1, 2016, residents of Lucknow have had to travel out of town to get their groceries.

However, Jeannette Poirier of St. Helen's hopes to stem that tide with the Small Town Grocery in downtown Lucknow.

Located at 605 Campbell Street, just east of Mac's Milk, the store opened Feb. 27, and has "anything and everything" available, including bread, butter, canned goods, dry goods, and some fresh produce. Frozen food, frozen vegetables and ice cream will soon be added.

"We opened this store to help the community," said Poirier, who operates the Me To You thrift store across the street.

"When Knechtel's closed, there was nothing here. It's tough for people to travel out of town if they don't drive or don't have a vehicle. We have a lot of seniors here and we wanted to help them out as well."

Poirier said the Small Town Grocery does not carry milk, meat or home-baked goods because those are available at Mac's Milk, Green's Meats and Armstrong's Bakery in the village.

"People have been in already, checking it out," said Poirier, who is assisted by staff member, Judy Condy of Lucknow.

The store also has a "Wanted List" - people can jot down items they need and Poirier will do her best to obtain them for her customers.

The Small Town Grocery is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 519-528-5486 or cell phone: 519-441-8146.
