Lions Foundation of Canada Walk for Dog Guides set for Kincardine, Tiverton, May 28

The annual Lions Foundation of Canada Walk for Dog Guides will be held in Kincardine and Tiverton, Sunday, May 28. The national sponsor this year is Pet Valu.

In Kincardine, the event begins with registration at 12:30 p.m. at Lions Park, beside the Davidson Centre, followed by the walk at 1 p.m., with participants led off by a piper.

There will be an autism assistance dog guide on hand, plus balloons, a barbecue, and a draw for a couple of pet treat baskets. The route goes through the trails at the Davidson Centre, and those with mobility issues can walk around the track.

In Tiverton, the event also begins with registration at 12:30 p.m. at the Lions Hall, followed by the walk at 1 p.m.

All funds raised go to training and placing dog guides with disabled Canadians at no cost to the recipient, even though it costs about $25,000 to train and place each dog. There is no government funding, so all money in support of this program is fund-raised or donated.

There are six categories of dogs trained: Canine Vision; Hearing Ear; Service Dogs (for those who are physically-disabled); Autism Assistance; Seizure Response; and Diabetic Alert (for people who have Type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness).
