Huron Heights students learn the art of puppetry

Students in Grades 5 and 6 at Huron Heights Public School, Kincardine, have been learning the skills of puppetry and put on a performance for their fellow classmates in the library, Thursday afternoon.

Led by Kincardine artist and puppeteer Andrea Zimmer, the Wildlife Puppet Project was made possible through an Artists in Education grant from the Ontario Arts Council.

Since January, Zimmer has been working with the students (and with a Grade 5 class at Ripley-Huron Community School as well) on their chosen animal in Bruce County, including blue herons, rainbow trout, foxes, etc.

The classes were held once a week at each school, with the students creating their puppets out of recycled and household materials, and then using the puppets to tell a story.

Their hard work culminated in the performance of those stories Thursday afternoon.

Zimmer has enough funding from the grant to continue the puppet program with two more classes next year.
