The "Flood Waters and You" student safety program will once again be available to schools and interest groups in the Saugeen watershed (Bruce and Grey counties) this year.
During the months of March and April, representatives from Saugeen Conservation, the OPP and St. John Ambulance, will be available to assist classrooms and community youth groups with student safety awareness efforts. In contributing to this locally-developed safety program, each organization offers its own presentation involving an assortment of demonstrations, videos and hand-outs. Programs may vary to suit the class schedule and the age and number of participants.
Floods can occur at any time of the year. Predominately, though, the risks of flooding are higher in the spring with the added water from snow-melt. Early spring is a particularly dangerous time for young children who are drawn to water to race sticks down ditches and streams. Melting winter snow, combined with the spring rainfall, can result in rising flood waters.
The "Flood Waters and You" student safety program is offered free of charge through the co-operative efforts of Saugeen Conservation, the OPP and St. John Ambulance, to warn young people of flood-related dangers. This program has been very popular since its inception in 1987, reaching more than 2,000 young people within the watershed annually.
