Beginning July 13, echocardiography services will be expanded at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre's Kincardine and Walkerton hospital sites to include contrast examinations.
A contrast echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination of the heart, where a contrast agent is injected into the blood stream to allow for a more detailed assessment of cardiac function.
This service is not currently provided in the Grey-Bruce region, requiring patients to travel to larger centres to have this examination.
Bringing this service to the Kincardine and Walkerton hospitals has been made possible through collaboration with the South Bruce Grey Health Centre's diagnostic imaging department, the Kincardine Family Health Team, and the London Health Sciences Centre cardiology team.
Earlier this year, the heath centre launched a cardiology clinic at the Kincardine hospital in partnership with the London Cardiac Institute and London Health Sciences Centre. General cardiologists, as well as sub-specialty cardiologists with expertise in electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, and heart failure, are now seeing patients on a weekly basis in Kincardine.
"Kincardine is quickly becoming a cardiac hub for the region," said Paul Rosebush, president and chief executive officer of the health centre. "Being ale to offer these specialized services right here in our communities provides a better experience for our patients and, ultimately, improves outcomes."
