Flood watch continues in Saugeen watershed
The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) has updated its message from the one issued Friday at 4:30 pm.
In a statement released Saturday at 7 a.m., the Flood Forecast Centre stated that water levels in the South Saugeen River peaked in the latter part of Friday and are quickly receding. Levels are still well above normal, however, and due caution is warranted. Flood levels over the past 24 hours on the South Saugeen River greatly exceeded previous records, from the past 30 to 40 years.
The Main Saugeen River at Walkerton crested at approximately 5 a.m. Saturday, and levels should recede through the rest of the day. Downstream of Walkerton through to Paisley and Southampton, the Main Saugeen River is still climbing.
The Flood Warning status is now lifted for those municipalities in the South Saugeen River Watershed, including portions of the Municipalities of Wellington North, Southgate, Minto, West Grey and South Bruce.
The Flood Watch remains in effect throughout the watershed as many streams are still running bank full. Water levels will remain high for the next 48 hours.
The SVCA strongly recommends that the public
not use the Main Saugeen River for canoeing or kayaking this weekend. Significant turbulence and floating debris could pose a hazard. Similarly, the public is advised to stay away from local waterways.
In addition, vehicle owners are advised not to drive through flooded roads. Damage to road beds and other obstacles may not be visible due to the presence of flood water.
SVCA Flood Forecast staff are no longer available at the Formosa office over the weekend; however, should municipal flood co-ordinators need to contact staff, members can be reached via cell phone numbers listed in the SVCA’s Flood Contingency Plan.
This message is in effect until 5 p.m., Monday, June 26, unless a further message is issued.
