Wide range of topics covered at Bruce County Farm Safety Day in Tiverton
Youngsters were fascinated by the many things there were to learn about being safe, during the seventh annual Bruce County Farm Safety Day, held at the Tiverton Sports Centre, Tuesday, July 18.

Organized by the Tiverton Agricultural Society, a total of 66 children, ages five to 12, participated in the event which offered six different sessions in the morning, and five in the afternoon.

One of the most exciting demonstrations was Hydro One's electrocution display, where Kelly Gallaugher explained how important it is to be aware of electrical safety inside and outside the home.

The youngsters got to tour an ambulance and learn about emergency services from paramedic Paul Wilson of Mildmay, a member of Bruce Paramedic Services.

And the children were captivated by the poison safety demonstration as they learned from Desiree D'Souza that dangerous chemicals can look like regular substances around the house, such as ammonia and water, kool-aid and windshield washer fluid. That's why you never store chemicals in a jar unless it is labelled and safely stored, she told them.

Kincardine fire chief Kent Padfield discussed emergency management and what you should have in a knapsack or storage bag in case you have to leave your home or survive in the elements for an extended period of time.

Other sessions featured: farm safety, flood safety, dentistry, a hearing display, pet safety, fire safety, St. John Ambulance services, the health unit, and the day ended with a session about grain safety.

The children, many from the Bright Beginnings Daycare in Tiverton, then received certificates and take-home bags.
