Woman dies in plane crash near Goderich
(GODERICH & ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH, ON) - Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 8:43 p.m. Huron County OPP officers, the Goderich Fire Department and Huron County Paramedic Services responded to the Goderich Municipal "Sky Harbour" Airport, in relation to witness reports of a small airplane that appeared to be flying in distress in close proximity to the airport. 
 
A ground, air and water search was immediately commenced with OPP and the Trenton Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre. 
 
Thursday, Sept. 21, around 2:30 a.m., Huron OPP Marine Unit members located crash debris from a small, fixed-wing airplane in Lake Huron approximately one-and-a-half kilometres from the shoreline, west of the airport. The OPP also located an adult female nearby in the water. She was transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
 
Emergency crews are currently searching the area for the second occupant of the aircraft.
 
OPP Underwater Search & Recovery Unit is on scene to assist with the investigation.
 
The crash investigation continues, by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. with the assistance of the OPP and the Office of the Coroner.
 
Goderich Municipal "Sky Harbour" Airport remains open. Pilots should call ahead as there are some restrictions in place.
