Power Workers' Union helps fund programs at KDSS
The Power Workers' Union (PWU) Bruce Site Equity Committee has donated more than $8,000 to Kincardine District Secondary School.
Rob Rix of the PWU was at the school Wednesday, Oct. 4, to present a cheque for $5,000 to support sports, activities and safe schools programs.
He also presented a cheque for $1,250 in support of the Breakfast for Learning program, and anti-bullying activities and events.
Earlier, Cathy Luinstra of the PWU presented a cheque for $2,000 to KDSS teacher Tim Luinstra in support of his Outdoor Education class trip to Algonquin Park, set to run in the spring of 2018.
These funds will assist students taking the program and in the purchase of equipment for canoeing the Saugeen River and the Algonquin Canoe Trip. Students who take this course will learn a variety of skills including swimming and canoe-rescue techniques which are useful in the wilderness and in the local waters.
Wilderness and camping skills learned will be put to the test on a two-day trip down the Saugeen River and a five-day wilderness trip into Algonquin Park. The program has become so popular at the school that more than 40 students have signed up for the 2018 class.
KDSS appreciates the generous donation from the PWU. For many students, this is a highlight and a major accomplishment in their high school career. These much-needed funds keep this program running.
