Huron OPP reports distracted driving results; and alcohol charges

HURON OPP DISTRACTED DRIVING CAMPAIGN RESULTS

(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Last week, the OPP wrapped up its province-wide Distracted Driving Campaign which ran from March 14-20. Huron County OPP saw a total of 58 drivers charged with Distracted Driving during the campaign.

The number of charges laid during this campaign increased in Huron County from a total of 47 in 2014. The increase in charges was also seen in several other OPP detachments in the region and across the province.

This campaign received tremendous support from the public, media and numerous road-safety partners who shared the messaging pertaining to the dangers of distracted driving.
As evidenced by the latest campaign results, there are still a percentage of drivers who choose to take unnecessary risks by using their phone while operating a vehicle. Not only did those 58 drivers place themselves at a higher risk of a collision, they also placed every other user of the roadway at an elevated risk of a collision.

Although the week-long Distracted Driving Campaign has concluded in Huron County our local officers will remain focused on their patrols for those drivers who fail to leave the phone alone.

FEMALE DRIVER FACES ALCOHOL CHARGES

(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – A 67-year-old woman is facing an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and a court date, following a traffic stop Wednesday, March 25.

At approximately 3:20 p.m. at the intersection of South Street and Suncoast Drive in Goderich, an off-duty Huron County OPP officer spotted the driver of a Toyota Rav4 consuming what appeared to be alcohol from a bottle of liquor. The off-duty officer followed the driver until patrol officers were able to stop the suspect vehicle.

The driver was stopped on Huron Road in Holmesville by patrol officers and upon speaking with the female driver, officers noted the she had been consuming alcohol. Officers also located an open bottle of alcohol inside the vehicle.
A roadside screening test was performed and the driver registered a fail. She was placed under arrest for Drive Motor Vehicle with Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol, and was transported to the Huron OPP detachment for breath tests. She later provided two samples of her breath to a qualified Intoxilizer Technician and both samples resulted in readings over the legal limit.

As a result, 67-year-old Patricia CLIFFORD of Goderich has been charged with Drive Motor Vehicle – Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol and Drive Motor Vehicle – Open Container of Liquor.  She has a court appearance scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich, May 4. She also received an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and her motor vehicle was impounded for seven days.
