South Bruce OPP report thefts; and vehicle collisions with deer
POLICE INVESTIGATING THEFT FROM VEHICLES

(KINCARDINE, ON) – Feb. 26, at 11:30 a.m., the South Bruce OPP received reports of overnight thefts from vehicles that were parked in the 500 block of Queen Street in Kincardine.

A Swiss army knife and a pair of Bushnell binoculars have been reported missing. There is no estimate of the value of the stolen property available at this time.

Suspicious vehicles and/or suspicious people should be reported to police as soon as possible so that an officer can investigate.

POLICE RESPONDING TO COLLISIONS INVOLVING DEER

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) - The South Bruce OPP is asking drivers to watch for wildlife as officers have been responding to collisions involving deer.

Between 6:25 p.m. on Feb. 26, and 4:28 a.m. March 1, officers responded to nine crashes involving deer. No injuries were reported at the scene.

The South Bruce OPP is reminding drivers of the following tips to help reduce the chances of hitting a deer:

  •  Be especially attentive from sunset to midnight and during the hours shortly before and after sunrise. These are the highest risk times for deer-vehicle collisions.
  • Drive with caution when moving through areas known to have a large deer population. Remember - deer seldom run alone. If you see one deer, others may be nearby.
  • When driving at night, use high-beam headlights when there is no oncoming traffic. The high beams will better illuminate the eyes of deer on or near the roadway.
  • Slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away.
  • Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path, but stay in your lane. Many serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid deer and hit another vehicle or lose control of their cars.
  • Always wear your seatbelt. Most people injured in deer-vehicle crashes were not wearing their seatbelt.
  • Do not rely on devices, such as deer whistles, deer fences and reflectors, to deter deer. Slow down, stay in control and stay alert.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a secure web-tip at www.cstip.ca, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
