Ripley Horticultural Society learns to solve horticultural problems during fun game
“Solving Horticultural Problems with Fun” was the theme of the Feb. 21 meeting as members of the Ripley and District Horticultural Society met in the newly-renovated Ripley Legion Hall.

After dispensing with the formal business, which included the announcement of new treasurer Marg Pollack, the meeting was turned over to convener Gail Vander Hoek.

Vander Hoek first collected questions from the audience then explained the rules of her game, “Sow, Grow, Show.” The participants were divided into teams and then took turns choosing questions from the three categories. Points were earned based on the accuracy and completeness of answers and whether outside assistance was needed.

The good-natured competition provoked excellent discussion on a number of topics from new plant varieties, maintenance of plants and community beautification issues to flower show tips. Thanks to the convener for a fun and educational activity!

The next meeting takes place March 14, at 1:30 p.m., at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre. The theme is “Bee Happy” and will focus on pollinators. This is a special gathering for youth and adult horticulturalists to join together for a fun program. Members are encouraged to bring grandchildren, and local children, ages six to 12, are also welcome. The event is free and membership in the horticultural society is not required.
