Group gathers to mark inaugural Professional Engineers Day
March 13, 2018
A group of local engineers gathered at Boston Pizza in Kincardine to mark the inaugural Professional Engineers Day in Ontario.
Organized by retired engineer Glenn Sutton, former mayor of Kincardine, the event was sponsored by the Georgian Bay Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
'This is a significant win for members of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and an important day for professional engineers from coast-to-coast, as the first day of its kind in Canada,” said Sutton.
“Professional engineers are trusted and ethical leaders – they create paradigm-changing solutions to complex problems that drive and improve the world around us. This day recognizes the vital role that professional engineers play in building, innovating and safe-guarding our lives.”
Sutton said every professional engineer wears a ring of stainless steel or iron as a reminder of this vital role.
Joining the engineers for their celebration, were Diane Foxton and John McPhee, representing Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson's office.
McPhee read some congratulatory comments from Thompson:
“I would love to have been there with you today to celebrate this very first Professional Engineers Day, but duty calls at Queen's Park.
“I am proud to have supported the creation of this day and I know it will help propel public awareness of the important work professional engineers do in practically all aspects of today's world, and the positive impact your profession has in today's economy.
“Hopefully, this proactive step will also open the world of engineering to today's students who could then become tomorrow's engineers.
“Congratulations everyone, and enjoy the day!”
The group enjoyed a celebration of pizza and cake.
Engineers are the first profession to be recognized by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for an official day.
Professional Engineers Day is an opportunity for professional engineers and EIT (Engineers-in-Training) to meet and network with fellow engineers.
