The Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band has been invited by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch in the Netherlands to participate in celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Holland.
The band's participation will greatly enhance celebrations, and increase awareness in Kincardine and area of the importance of Canada’s significant role in liberating Holland back in 1944-45, says John McManus, a 22-year member of the pipe band.
The Kincardine Scottish will be travelling to the Netherlands, May 1, and will be hosted by the Municipality of Almelo in the eastern Netherlands where the band will be performing in celebration events, parades and at local venues, McManus says.
While in the Netherlands, the band will also be participating in memorial services at two Canadian War Cemeteries in Holten and Groesbeek. In anticipation of the visits to these cemeteries, band members have endeavoured to assemble a list of Bruce County men who were killed in action in the Netherlands. They plan to honour these men at their grave sites.
It is very likely that some of these men are known and perhaps related to people still living in Kincardine and area, says McManus. If so, the band would like to hear from you. Visit the band's ‘News Blog’ on its website at www.kspb.ca, for a listing of the fallen soldiers, and for more information as the band honours their sacrifice.
