The second annual Hike for Hospice saw an increase in participation and funds raised for Huron Shores Hospice.
More than 90 walkers and hikers gathered at the Davidson Centre, Kincardine, Saturday morning to hike the trails, or walk the outdoor track or indoor track at the centre.
The final tally, saw $15,225.50 raised to maintain the current hospice suite at Tiverton Park Manor, and to develop a second suite.
“We exceeded our goal, and we are very pleased with the community enthusiasm and support for hospice care,” said Cheryl Cottrill, chairperson of the Huron Shores Hospice board of directors.
She thanked everyone for taking part, especially the volunteers, the sponsors for their support, John Farrell and Larry Whittle of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, Bill MacTavish of the Kincardine Trails Association, and the Kincardine Lions Club.
Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie welcomed everyone and congratulated the hospice committee for garnering the community support for the first hospice suite in Tiverton.
“There is still a huge need,” she said. “We must raise the money to keep that one open and for a second suite.”
Mike Rencheck, president and chief executive officer of Bruce Power, also thanked everyone for joining in the event.
“Bruce Power is a proud supporter of this hospice project as it is part of developing strong communities,” he said. “It's a great day for a hike. Let's enjoy some fun in the sun.”
After a warm-up, courtesy of Lakeside Clan Fitness, the pipers led the participants in a lap around the outdoor track, and then they were off hiking and walking.
Last year, the inaugural Hike for Hospice welcomed 60 participants and raised $12,127.45.
The next major fund-raiser is the Handbags for Hospice, Thursday, Sept. 20, from 6-9 p.m., at the Kincardine Pavilion.
