Lobb announces Bruce County Rail Trail upgrades between Kincardine and Saugeen Shores

Residents and visitors in Kincardine and Saugeen Shores will soon benefit from Bruce County Rail Trail upgrades, thanks to federal investments to expand and improve snowmobile, All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), off-road motorcycle and non-motorized recreational trails from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

Bruce County will receive $80,000 for trail surface improvements - to upgrade the trail surface of the Bruce County Rail Trail between Bruce County Road 33 in the Municipality of Kincardine and Concession 6 in Saugeen Shores. The 18-kilometre trail is currently unsuitable for trail activities other than snowmobiling and ATV'ing. The resurfacing will make it suitable for non-motorized trail use, including hiking and bicycling.

Canada has a vast network of recreational trails which allow Canadians to experience the outdoors and appreciate this country’s natural beauty. Thanks to a partnership between the Government of Canada and the National Trails Coalition (NTC), $10-million has been made available between 2014 and 2016 to help expand and rehabilitate Canada’s snowmobile, ATV and non-motorized trail system.

Wednesday's announcement is just one of many examples of supported projects that will positively impact Canadian communities. Projects, such as Bruce County Rail Trail upgrades, will contribute to ensuring access to Canada’s unique scenery while generating economic growth and creating jobs.

“Our Government is pleased to support Bruce County Rail Trail upgrades as part of our efforts to expand and improve recreational and multi-purpose trails across the country," says Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb. "By investing in trail infrastructure, our government is encouraging job creation, linking communities and increasing recreational opportunities for Canadians. Through this commitment, we are continuing to support economic growth from coast-to-coast-to-coast while ensuring that Canadian communities remain among the best in the world to live.”

“On behalf of the residents of Bruce County, I want to thank the federal government and Ben Lobb for their continued support," says Bruce County warden Mitch Twolan. "I would also like to thank the NTC for its work as well. This announcement will further enhance the well-being of all of Bruce County.”

“The NTC was founded in the belief that trail-users and volunteer trail builders/managers can achieve much more working collaboratively and supporting each other’s goals," says Jo-Anne Farquhar, president of the NTC board of directors. "Thanks to the support of the federal government, trail-users have once again been able to apply for project grant money. These additional funds of $10-million from the federal government will ensure the revitalization of recreational trails across our country and provide individuals and families with the opportunity to enjoy quality outdoor infrastructure and continue to live active and healthy lives.”

Quick Facts:

Economic Action Plan 2014 announced funding of $10-million over two fiscal years, 2014-15 and 2015-16, to expand and improve snowmobile, ATV, off-road motorcycle and non-motorized recreational trails across the country through an agreement between the Government of Canada and the National Trails Coalition.
This funding will help build and renew multi-purpose trails for walking, running, cross-country skiing, biking, ATV use and snowmobiling.
Between 150 and 200 projects are expected to be supported across Canada. The NTC is responsible for selecting and approving projects.
