Readers thankful Secord monument to be left alone

To the Editor:
RE: “Dr. Solomon Secord monument to remain on Kincardine's main street”

Thank  goodness sanity reigns in Kincardine. 

If council had listened to the confused ex-American, we would be no better than the confused and ignorant masses in what used to be a great country.

You or your descendants do not learn from history if you tear down or hide the truth, and in this particular case, we had an interloper who did not know or have all the facts.

And yes, Sir John A. Macdonald's statue should stay wherever it stands in this country no matter what Scotland may do or say.

I congratulate Kincardine council for not succumbing to the request of Mr. Thompson to have the memorial removed.

Our history is an important reminder of our past and if Mr. Thompson and so many others on the similar bandwagon would do some research, they would find these historical monuments are very much appropriate!

Read Dr. Secord’s history. To toot the Kincardine Theatre Guild's horn, the musical, “Kincardine Calls,” by June Daniel and Ian Burbidge, gives you a peek at Solomon’s life, including why he went to the south.

He was an abolitionist, but he realized that the south needed medical help. He was not for either side, although he was caught by the north and almost hanged.

He is part of Kincardine history. Leave the monument alone - there is not a Confederate flag on it.

And I set my watch by the sun dial, so keep it.

Oh, and if it comes down, I would suggest his house comes down too – do you know which house is his?
