Voter saddened and disgusted with electronic voting system
Dear Editor:
I watched the Kincardine municipal candidates' debate. I would love to exercise my right to vote but, alas, I cannot as my anonymity will be compromised. The use of a PIN (Personal Identification Number) and Voter ID takes this away.
The whole idea of voting and the use of a paper ballot, is to ensure that the individual vote is kept confidential and anonymous. This electronic system strips away that right and is surely, unconstitutional because of it and the way it is set up.
We had a candidate for our ward stop by our home to ask for support and, when questioned about this very thing, he agreed that yes, the use of Voter ID and a PIN does mean that the way you vote can be tracked and traced back to you, the individual. He did say that "just the clerks have access to this information" but still, NO ONE is supposed to know how you vote. That's the whole idea of the ballots.
This electronic system and the assigning of a PIN, strips away a fundamental right of a democratic society.
Whose brilliant idea was this?! I am very disappointed that, for the first time since I came of age to vote, I cannot only
not vote but, I cannot even refuse the right to vote because of the way this system is set up and the way my personal identity is being compromised. I am very, very disappointed and disheartened that such a decision was made without the foresight into the ramifications that our forebears fought for - our very rights and freedoms.
Saddened and disgusted,
Sandra Benbow
