Kincardine Bantams win regional Silver Stick after lengthy, hard-fought championship game

December 30, 2018

It took three periods of regulation time, two over-time periods, and a shoot-out to decide the Bantam “B” championship game at the 32nd annual Kincardine Regional Silver Stick tournament, Sunday night.

The stands were full of fans at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, as the Kincardine Bantam Kinucks took on the Tavistock Titans in the final game to decide who would advance to the International Silver Stick finals in January.

Despite lots of scoring chances and end-to-end play, neither team could notch a goal, and at the end of regulation time, the score was still 0-0.

This put the game into a five-minute, sudden-death overtime period, with only four players per side.

When this produced no results, the game went into a two-minute, sudden-death overtime period, with just three players per side.

And finally, with both teams pretty much exhausted and the fans going wild, the game would be decided by a shoot-out.

Tavistock went first but Kincardine's goalie, Kwade Beisel, made the save.

Kincardine's Cam Fletcher then took a shot but was foiled by the Tavistock goalie.

The Titans took their second shot but Beisel thwarted that attempt.

Nathan Arnold then took to the ice for the Kinucks, and fired a shot that went around the Tavistock goalie and into the net, much to the delight of the fans!

Tavistock took its third shot and that was stopped by Beisel, giving Kincardine the 3-1 win, and the championship banner.

In presenting the medals, Ray Luinstra of the tournament committee, said that in the many years he has been involved in the Kincardine Silver Stick, he has never seen such a close championship final.

The Bantam Kinucks will now compete in the International Silver Stick finals, slated for Jan. 25-27, 2019, in Forest.
